Book Title:
MY NAME IS ASHER LEV

Book Author:
Chaim Potok
Publisher: Penguin
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Description/Review :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  Not historical fiction even though it took place in the year 1943 Brooklyn, NY,but a story worth reading if you enjoy a rich moving story that may very well bring you to tears. It's a story about a little boy who has been given the gift of art. This is a moving story, I had a very hard time putting down, and after it was finished made me sad that it was. I read a book a week, most stories I forget shortly after. This story will stay with me for a long time.

Book Title:
THE SWORD AND SHIELD OF THE REALM

Book Author:
Florian Stone Wells
Publisher: www.sapientus.com
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Description/Review :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  Dear Reviewer, Not often the new is worthy of note but this time it is, and it needs friends & I take the liberty to introduce to you my newly released historical novel, which the Historical Fiction Org. in Great Britain recommend to every school librarian to buy it. THE SWORD AND THE SHIELD OF THE REALM By FLORIAN STONE WELLS The first novel of MERCHANTS OF TIME A seven-part historical series Before the rise to dominance of Western Europe, there was a pivotal time in history when the world was consumed by the epic struggle between the Islamic Empire of the Ottomans and the Christian Kingdoms of Eastern Europe. Two civilizations and two very different ways of life confronted each other. Those events shook the world and still reverberate in todays headlines, with the fate of mankind yet to be decided & The Sword and the Shield of the Realm debuts the historical series MERCHANTS of TIME, a seven-novel journey into the maelstrom of Eastern Europe during the years between 1448 and 1529, a colorful epoch marked by turbulence and mayhem. A tale of mystery and suspenseful adventure, the novel takes the reader in a time when, in the intricate tapestry of human history, many of todays predicaments took root. Using the compelling account of true historical events as a backdrop to understand philosophical and religious differences that so profoundly impact our world, the author provides the reader with greater insight into the painful truths of our past. The year is 1448. Transylvania and Wallachia, The Sword and the Shield of the Kingdom of Hungary, are about to be invaded by an immense army under the banner of Sultan Murad II, the man who calls himself The Shadow of Allah upon the World & More can be viewed at www.sapientus.com. The book is available for order at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, Alibris, or local bookstore.

Book Title:
SHARPE'S WATERLOO

Book Author:
Bernard Cornwell
Publisher: Harper
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Description/Review :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  I feel like others some trepidation about reviewing the author's work on his own website. All the same, I loved this novel. Since this is part of the ongoing Sharpe saga, I won't play the spoiler. But I think it sufficient to say that the personal and martial exploits of Richard Sharpe dovetail nicely into the story of the great battle. What impresses me most is the treatment of characters. Character's we've come to know are refreshed and brought into the story with ease. New characters are made real with an economy and quality of writing that doesn't hinder the flow of events. There is of course the action of conflict. And here the author does not disappoint. I imagine it was a challenge for him to capture the scope of the massive battle. But this was done in a way that captured the desperation of battle and the ebb and flow of fortunes. It was also fitting that the horror and carnage should be portrayed. I would say that the author struck the perfect balance in that respect. Waterloo does not have the grisly carnage of Pressfield's superb Gates of Fire. But it does bring home the horror of war in a way that makes the old movie version (with Rod Steiger as Napoleon and Christopher Plummer as Wellington) seem almost tame in comparison. I also think that fans of cavalry exploits will enjoy the British and French charges. The action here equals or exceeds many I have read. Indeed, I'll put them up there with Sienkiewicz's accounts of 17th Century Polish Winged Hussar battles. In addition, I'd like to commend the author for noting the valor of the common soldier. And not just the British soldier. In these days of French bashing, some forget the "elan" of the common French soldier. An elan which carried him into the deadly fire of British volleys and later into German machine guns. All in all, a worthy novel if read on it's own or as part of the Sharpe saga.

Book Title:
THE KING'S PLEASURE

Book Author:
Norah Lofts
Publisher: Touchstone Books
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Description/Review :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  While searching my local book store for one of the books I found posted by a reader from Cornwell's book club I happened too find this book. After reading the first 50 pages I knew it was going to be a long night. The story of Henry the V111 first wife Katharine of Aragon, this book is full of historical information as well as a great story; something all fans of Cornwell look for. More than anything this is the story that changed the catholic church for better or worse forever. Also the church of england. All and all an excellent read. After this read I will surely look for more books written by the late Norah Lofts

Book Title:
WALLS OF JERICHO

Book Author:
Jonathan Hopkins
Publisher: YouWriteOn.com
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Description/Review :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  Dear Bernard I blame Richard Sharpe. And my late father. Dad left me a boxful of your novels, and Sharpe's snide remarks about the British cavalry (with a few honourable exceptions) got my goat. They couldn't have all been that bad, could they? So I read and read, until my wife was sick of me talking about the 'bl**dy cavalry'. And I thought, on balance, that historians had been particularly unkind to the horsemen. Now I'm no historian (a surfeit of political history at school throttled any interest) but I've always been quite good at stories. Someone needed to play fair with the cavalry, and I thought, 'I can write a book just as well as this Cornwell fella.' What a naive fool I was! Anyway, the end result is that my first novel was published this month. Entitled 'Walls of Jericho' (ISBN1849230307), it tells the story of two young cavalrymen in the years leading up to Vimeiro, the action peaking with the 20th Light Dragoons disastrous (or perhaps not!)charge across the battlefield. I couldn't resist including a tiny homage to Sharpe's men, which any of your fans who read the story may spot. I would not have started writing, let alone complete and publish the book, without the inspiration you provided, and I'll be forever grateful to you for that. When the first copies were delivered, my mother held one up, had a little weep and said, 'Your father would have loved this.' That alone was worth all the effort. I hope you manage to find enough gaps in Mister Sharpe's career to write at least a half-dozen more adventures - my current set is beginning to get pretty dog-eared from use! My very best wishes, and compliments of the season to you and your family. Kind regards, Jonathan Hopkins www.cavalrytales.co.uk.

BOUDICA; DREAMING THE EAGLE (Boudica 1)

Book Author:
Manda Scott
Publisher: Bantam Books; New edition edition (2 Feb 2004)
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Description/Review :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  I have recently read this whole four book set and found it enthralling. If you are a fan of historical novels the Boudica set will probably end up on your favourite reads list. Manda Scott creates well rounded characters that are easy to relate to. The whole set seams well researched and informative whilst it maintains a good momentum throughout all the four books.

  This book is the first of a lengthy but extremely fascinating series, that provides a highly plausible and entertaining addition to the legend of King Arthur.The book follows a blacksmith, Publius Varrus,who in the midst of the chaos after Rome's withdrawal from the British isles, helps found the legendary city of Camelot. For any who enjoyed Mr. Cornwell's Warlord series masterpieces this is absolutely right up there.
