Book Title:
THE THINGS THEY CARRIED

Book Author:
Tim O'Brien
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin, 1990
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Description/Review :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  I happened upon this book during my college courses, and didn't think I would enjoy it. Generally speaking, books concerning Vietnam cover a generally bleak and sordid black and white sentiment: valiant soldiers fighting for their country, or horrible tales of death and destruction. This particular book has neither. It is, in effect, a war story about war stories. The detail and language style is something to be in awe of, despite the fact that there is no real way to determine what is fabricated and what is true. There are no tales of heroism, of guts and glory. It is more of a perspective piece; it is told in a way that makes you feel the mud, the grime, and the aches of common grunts. This is due in no small part to O'Brien's intimate knowledge of the field. There is no way to review this book in a way that will do it justice. Suffice it to say that it will leave you breathless.

Book Title:
ROMA

Book Author:
Steven Saylor
Publisher: St.Martin's Press
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Description/Review :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  As the title says, this is a historical fiction on the eternal city. From its founding Rome had been shrouded in myth. Here is a highly readable novel on how it all started, and the transformations she underwent over the years and the big and small men who led her to her golden years. The tales are mainly centered around two families who had been there since the start to the end. There is only one word grand enough to describe the 1000-year journey, epic, and believe me, even that is an understatement.

THE DIEZMO

Book Author:
Rick Bass
Publisher: Mariner
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Description/Review :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  Takes place shortly after Texas broke off from Mexican rule and became its own Republic. The story is told in a unique way and has good deal of historical fact mixed in. Could not put down this book.

Book Title:
THE RETREAT FROM MOSCOW AND OTHER POEMS

Book Author:
Brian Walters
Publisher: Wilder Publications
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Description/Review :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  This book contains a variety of poems that read more like prose, many of which are narratives based on historical incidents. The title poem concerns a French soldier trying to survive the horrors of Napoleon's retreat from Moscow in 1812. There are also stories about the American Civil War along with poems dealing with American Indians. Unlike a lot of modern poetry that is abstract and often hard to understand, these works are written in a clear and precise language. Another book by the author will be published in October 2009.

Book Title:
A GAME OF THRONES

Book Author:
George R.R. Martin
Publisher: Voyager
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Description/Review :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  This is the first book in the breathtaking George RR Martin fantasy series collectively known as "A Song of Ice and Fire."

The series is non-historical, but realistically medieval in most senses. The books bring to life a world bereft of the extremes of black and white which so clearly pervade most fantasies, and where violence and treachery lurk around every corner. Martin masterfully weaves a massive and varied cast of characters into an inexorable collision course with one another, and the events unfolding in the world around them. There is little in the way of magic and sorcery in these books, but intrigue, honor, cruelty, and the scorching heat of battle run rampant through their pages. As an historian, I've always found the obligatory wizards and dragons of most fantasies off-putting, but could not more highly recommend these novels.

GENGHIS: BIRTH OF AN EMPIRE

Book Author:
Conn Iggulden
Publisher: Dell Publishing
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Description/Review :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  This Book is wonderful and steeped in historical fact. One of the best reads ever and even better it is a series (if you're like me). It is a lot like Bernard's books. I am now reading the second one (Lords of the Bow). I teach history and find these books pretty much right on.

Book Title:
VICTORY POINT: Operations Red Wings and Whalers

Book Author:
Ed Darack
Publisher: The Berkley Publishing Group
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Description/Review :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  When the historical novels are written about the war in Afghanistan, this book will be a source. Its about the US 2/3 Marines who entered Afghanistan in June 2005. Everybody is somewhat familiar with Red Wings, where the Navy lost more SEALS in one day than any in previous history. Whalers is the follow-up operation that was a total US 2/3 Marine effort and a total success. Ed Darack, the author, is not some newbie imbed. He was in Afghanistan back when the Soviets were there, is very familiar with the Hindu Kush region, and has written an excellent account of the US 2/3 Marines efforts that went totally unnoticed by rest of the media. This is a great read.

Book Title:
THE GAME OF KINGS

Book Author:
Dorothy Dunnett
Publisher: Vintage Books
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Description/Review :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  This is the first of six books collectively known as 'The Lymond Chronicles'. The others are: Queen's Play, The Disorderly Knights, Pawn in Frankincense, The Ringed Castle and Checkmate. The books follow the life and fortunes of Francis Crawford of Lymond, the younger son of the Crawfords of Culter, fictional characters interwoven with the real events of the time in a story that begins in mid-sixteenth century Scotland and takes the reader on, with Francis, to France, the Ottoman Empire, Russia and England. Lymond is complex, quite brilliant and ostensibly indomitable, but as the consequences of his actions and his family history begin to unravel, he is drawn ever closer to a disastrous end from which it seems, he has no escape. If you like a long read, then, at over 3,000 pages, these books are a real treat and wonderfully written: "Lymond flung up his head, turned half around with the force of the explosion. The bow fell. For one second two he held fast to the broken coping, defying the heralds of agony and an easy darkness." And if you want to know more then, like Sharpe, Thomas and Uhtred, Lymond has his own pages on Wikipedia.

Book Title:
THE PISTOLEER

Book Author:
James Carlos Blake
Publisher: Canongate Books Ltd
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Description/Review :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  THE PISTOLEER is fascinating & masterful historical novel about John Wesley Harding;the notorious wild west gunfighter(or serial killer-you look at it whichever way you want).The author rearranges the chronology of Hardin's life & times & murders into a melange of time & place altering devices as narrated by his family,friends & enemies.Anyone recall CITIZEN KANE?Let me take a paragraph to tout the novelist:Blake is 1 of American fictions best kept secrets.He's very highly regarded by writers that are well respected & who he travels in the same territory with,such as James Lee Burke,Cormac McCarthy & Pete Dexter,among many others.His genre is chiefly historical action fiction re;outlaws & badasses.He's written several novels about bank robbers & prize fighters set in the depression era south & has done quite the same with stories about mercenaries,bootleggers & gunrunners in the 19th century.Look out for WILDWOOD BOYS;about Quantrill & the Missouri raiders in the civil war.Blake's prose leans heavily towards the apocalyptic & takes on a kind of white trash biblical timbre.This is why he's thought of in the same light as Cormac McCarthy.I dont want to seem pushy,but I must urge historical fiction fans to get into this guy.Any 1 of his 11 novels will turn you on to no end.

BRETHREN, CRUSADE, REQUIEM (Trilogy....so far anyway!)

Book Author:
Robyn Young
Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Description/Review :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  Hi, I found this series of novels when seeing if there was anything coming out from Mr Cornwell and went to the section if you like this try.... The story is extremely compelling and the writing has similarities to Mr Cornwell's style. the story goes from the holy land crusades all the way to Edward Longshanks fighting on two fronts in Scotland and France and the story has twists and turn to keep you reading (and not getting much sleep). I myself am very particular regarding what I read but this ticks all the boxes. A MUST READ
