Book Title:
THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE PINK CARNATION

Book Author:
Lauren Willig
Publisher: Allison and Busby
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Description/Review :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  This is the first of a series of books about amateur spies during the early 1800's. As romantic and frothy as they are suspenseful, still great fun, and I know for a fact that the author is a Sharpe fan.

Book Title:
TO DO AND DIE

Book Author:
Patrick Mercer
Publisher: HarperCollins
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Description/Review :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  A well written story set in the Crimean War following a young officer in the new 95th regiment (not the green jackets). Well researched and brings the futility of Victorian trench warfare to life. As far as I'm concerned this book is a must

Book Title:
THE RUINS OF GORLAN (THE RANGER'S APPRENTICE SERIES

Book Author:
John Flanagan
Publisher: Corgi Yearling Books
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Description/Review :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  He had always wanted to be a warrior. The Rangers, with their dark cloaks and shadowy ways, made him nervous. The villagers believe the Rangers practice magic that makes them invisible to ordinary people. And now fifteen year-old Will, always small for his age, has been chosen as a Ranger's apprentice. What he doesn't realize yet is that the Rangers are the protectors of the kingdom. Highly trained in the skills of battle and surveillance, they fight the battles before the battles reach the people. And as Will is about to learn, there is a large battle brewing. The exiled Morgarath, Lord of the Mountains of Rain and Night, is gathering his forces for an attack on the kingdom. This time, he will not be denied . . . . - This amazing series is based on a fictional version of England, and is suited for kids of any age, and the whole series just kept me captivated both times I read through it.

Book Title:
THE FRENCH EXECUTIONER

Book Author:
C.C.Humphreys
Publisher: Orion
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Description/Review :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  The story of the French executioner who took the head of Anne Boleyn and of the vow he made to her before she died. The second book, called Blood Ties, continues the story 19 years later when the executioner must dig up old bones that threaten the safety of Anne's daughter Elizabeth. The vow must still be honoured. This author has also written the Jack Absolute books. I recommend all three of those as well. Enjoy!

Book Title:
THE OUTLANDER SERIES

Book Author:
Diana Gabaldon
Publisher: Orion Books
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Description/Review :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

  This series, which now consists of 7 very fat volumes, is the best historical fiction that I have read (and re-read many times!). The story revolves around two main characters; Jamie and Claire. Claire is a 19th Century woman who has travelled back in time through a ring of standing stones in the highlands of Scotland to the same place but two hundred years earlier. Jamie becomes her husband and partner in adventures that see them travel from Scotland and Europe to the New World. The historical research is meticulous and the descriptions of places and characters are so detailed and fascinating you'd believe this was a true story!
